Time for action on pavement parking!

It has now been three years since the government ran a public consultation to find out people’s views on pavement parking. However, the government still has not stated what firm action they are going to take to tackle the issue.

We've written to the Secretary of State for Transport, the Rt Hon Mark Harper MP, asking him to confirm the Government’s position on pavement parking and what action the government intends to take.

Dear Secretary of State I was delighted that back in November 2020 the government initiated a consultation on options to manage pavement parking in England. We are now three years on and your department has not even published the results of the consultation, never mind taken any action. I am writing to urge you to confirm your position on pavement parking and when you will be able to set out the action the government intends to take. Vehicles parking on the pavement causing an obstruction and damaging footway surfaces is an urgent problem and discriminates against pedestrians, especially for those with young children, older people and those with visual or mobility impairments. I support Sight Loss Councils to campaign for and with blind and partially sighted people. For people living with a visual impairment, pavement parking is not just an inconvenience but can lead to injury and risk of life. Pavements are for people and blind and partially sighted people should not have their independence and ability to get out curtailed by antisocial parking. I urge you to respond and tackle the scourge of pavement parking without delay.
